As of 2021, educational exchange programs were being carried out with 98 universities in all of the ten member nations of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). The exchange initiative has also been extended to other countries and regions outside of ASEAN, such as India, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Nepal as Asian countries. Some of the programs promote collaboration with the UN University for Peace, Asian Institute of Technology, and other international institutions.

Between 2011 and 2021, a total of 6,354 Japanese students were sent to universities in ASEAN and other Asian countries under the IUEP-ASEAN programs.

Between 2011 and 2021, a total of 5,462 foreign students came to Japan under the IUEP-ASEAN programs.

In all, 32 programs in diverse fields ranging from medicine to the humanities are being implemented. The IUEP is a five-year funding project supported by MEXT, and three programs were selected in 2011, fourteen in 2012, seven in 2013, and eight in 2016. Even after the subsidies were terminated, many of these programs have continued to exchange students between partner universities.

Currently, seven of the programs offer double degrees/joint degrees. Under the double degree programs, students can receive degrees from both a Japanese university and a foreign university. The joint degree program allows students to earn a diploma in the name of both a Japanese university and a foreign university. In addition to the above described programs, some programs issue completion certificates to participated students.
