Kyoto University participates in the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) and accepts international students from developing countries in Asia. One of them, Mr. Gugi Yogaswara, a master’s student at the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (April 2019 – March 2021), was selected as the first place winner in the “Rural Development and Environment” category of the ADB-JSP Thesis of the year Award 2022 (TOYA) by his master’s thesis (entitled: HOUSEHOLD WATER MANAGEMENT IN RURAL AND PERI-URBAN AREAS IN VIETNAM AND INDONESIA, supervisor: Prof. Shigeo Fujii)  He also presented his research at the workshop (online) held on September 16, 2022.

TOYA is a program in which the host universities nominate graduates of the ADB-JSP from the previous year by their dissertations, and the ADB selection committee selects the recipients from these candidates. In 2022, 24 students from 16 universities were nominated for the TOYA, and 7 students, including Mr. Gugi, received the award.

Mr. Gugi’s research investigated water use behavior patterns in four rural and peri-urban communities in Vietnam and Indonesia, respectively, and analyzed the socioeconomic factors that influence these patterns. For this purpose, he conducted questionnaire surveys and water quality analysis in Vietnam and Indonesia by himself, and collected a large amount of data. The AOYA selection process was based on (i) an emphasis on contributions to knowledge for development, (ii) knowledge contribution on the ADB Strategy 2030 and the Japan Government’s priority areas, (iii) the development of outstanding researchers in the field, and his research proved to be up to it.
