The USRN Student Research Attachment is a new initiative designed to provide students of USRN member universities with opportunities to undertake research directed towards solving social and community problems, which is an endeavour that represents one of the efforts of the USRN.  Kyoto University accepted three students for this pilot programme in March 2019; one each from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Peking University and Simon Fraser University.  The students’ academic interests include earthquakes, disasters and disaster recovery.

During the one month stay at Kyoto University, students belonged to the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability and studied according their interests by utilizing Kyoto University’s resources (facilities, faculty, etc.). In addition, students participated in international conferences such as ‘4th Global Summit of Research Institutes for Disaster Risk Reduction’ and visited earthquake-hit-areas, Kobe and Tohoku.

Kyoto University will continue to provide the research-based education program to network member universities as one of the attempts of the USR.
